Northern Skies arrives nearly four years since Natalie Gardiners last album and everything, yet nothing, has changed about her soulful music.
The deep, heart-of-the-night atmospherics of Natalies two preceding albums are still there, but is no longer constructed out of high tech beats and rich vocal arrangements. Northern Skies is instead a nakedly honest singer/songwriter double album that is filled with emotions that evoke loneliness and longing about passed times.
Long time collaborator Björn Ehlers uses upright piano and vintage keyboards this time to spotlight Gardiners unique voice and underscores her delivery with a quiet confidence making it Gardiners most adventures album so far.
This new earthy and upfront sound, sprung out of a natural progression rather than a sudden shift, will not surprise anyone who has followed Natalie Gardiner career. She has showcased an astonishingly eclectic variety of influences and strong individuality on earlier recordings.
In a time where many artists pride themselves in releasing a selection of random songs rather than thought through albums, Northern Skies is a journey back to a time where nothing was random on a record. Listening to Northern Skies it’s easy to understand why so many hold Natalie Gardiner so highly. Northern Skies is a collection of songs no one else could have recorded.
